The student job shadow experience is a one-day program which gives the student a first-hand look at a career by providing him/her with the opportunity to “shadow” a mentor in the work environment for a day. The career specialist helps the student to identify a career that matches his/her interests and locates an appropriate worksite. The student is expected to research the career using the resources available in the school and on the web. The goal of the experience is to provide the student with a realistic look at careers so that he/she can make sound and informed decisions. This experience may confirm a student’s career choice or direct him/her to further career exploration. Either result is valuable.

This year the Partnership placed 450 students with 66 different employers. This is a 25% increase in placements over last year. Students visited TV and radio stations, hotels and hospitals, state and local government offices, newspaper offices and skilled labor sites. Some of the students who participated went on to work with the employers in formalized internships.
